Free market in electricity

Free market in electricity ensures a possibility for consumers to choose the most acceptable power supplier and most favourable conditions. That results in competition which makes it possible for power suppliers to buy electricity from electricity producers or importers cheaper, and for consumers – to buy electricity from suppliers that offered them a suitable price and conditions. All Lithuanian electricity consumers will have to enter into a contract with a chosen power supplier before 1 January 2015.

How is the market being transformed?
The Lithuanian electricity market is being transformed based on the 2003 EU Electricity Directive. Its aim is to form a common European market for trading in electricity. It is planned that after the creation of the common Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian electricity market in 2015, this system will be able to be joined to the Scandinavian electricity market Nord Pool.

Market participants
